Mistress of Life

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“History, said a Latinist once, is the very life of the memory and the mistress of life. “Mistress of life” because it teaches us filial piety, piety towards out parents, our ancestors, our masters, our homeland. No land can be preserved without this piety which is a noble and spiritual sentiment, for it maintains relations above and beyond borders, even beyond death.”

“I often tell my students that of the future, the present and the past, only the past really has pith and reality. The present is only a fugitive instant. The future does not exist yet. The only reality is the past, and this is why so many people want to turn us away from it. The only facts are those from the past and that is why they want to push them away. It is part of human nature to live with the past, to build with it, to make anew with it. And this is why, when they want to kill initiative and the spirit of true creativity, they begin by abolishing all remembrance of the past. Fortunately, as Fustel de Coulanges said, “the past never completely dies; man can forget it, but he always has it within in.””
