“I have never forgotten that, though it is the strong faith of my parents that led me toward the priesthood, it was also the beauty of the liturgy, of Gregorian Chant, of our Breton canticles, our banners, gilded crosses, altars, sacred vessels and vestments, the stained-glass windows, the beauty of our churches and our Breton Calvaries found throughout the region; all of these fascinated my mind, my soul and my heart. Without this beauty, would I have become a priest? Perhaps not. I remember the famous Augustus Brizeux, the singer and herald of Catholic Brittany who, in recalling his youth, wrote with nostalgia of being a little choir boy in the church of Arzano: “O what vain pride it is to wish to know all things! My God, I may have been in possession of true knowledge already at the age of twelve years, when I was singing in the choir!”
