“Well! My friends, what you are doing to God today is the Adolphin’s move. He hardly ever sees you, and suddenly you all arrive, hands joined, looking all pious and transfixed by faith and repentance! Come on, come on, you gang of Adolphins! You mustn’t imagine that the Good Lord is more naive than my poor father, and that He doesn’t see through you right to the bottom of your little mischief! The Good Lord knows very well that there are quite a few here who have not come with sincere repentance, or to pray for the repose of their departed or to take one step in the way of their eternal salvation!… He knows perfectly well that you are here because your spring has dried up! There are those who are worried about their garden, others about the fields, others about their pigs, and still others because they don’t know what to put in their pastis! These prayers that you have the pretension to make, are prayers about beans, meditations on tomatoes, Alleluias for turnips, Hosannas for gourds! And all those prayers are adolphine prayers! They can’t go up to heaven because they haven’t wings any more than a stuffed turkey!”
