The king’s spouse

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

The last words of Charles on the brink of Eternity: “Good Savior, protect our dear children: Otto, Adelheid, Robert, Felix, Charles-Louis, Rudolf, Charlotte, and the littlest one. Protect their bodies, their souls, and let them die rather than commit one mortal sin.”

Last emperor and empress of Austria, king and queen of Hungary and Bohemia

“It’s no use trying to make me change my mind. I’ve decided to leave. Here in Switzerland, nothing can happen to my children. They are in good hands. But the emperor is in danger, and my duty as spouse demands that I prescind my duty as mother. So, you see, it is useless to describe to me all the risks of this expedition… it will only make my decision more firm… I am queen of Hungary, and if the King is going back, my place is at his side.” Five years earlier, during the coronation ceremony, the bishop of Veszprem placed the imperial crown on Zita’s shoulder as a “sign that she would help her spouse in carrying the heavy charge entrusted to him”: “Receive this crown of sovereignty, that you might know that you are the king’s spouse, and that you must always care for the people of God.”
