“I say to the mothers of families: always be good and tender toward your sons, toward your daughters. In general, they are always more worried about their sons than their daughters, when actually they must watch over their daughters as well. I tell them, “Your sons should have a great confidence in you, and should find in you an indulgent love. They should be able to tell you everything — their follies, their indiscretions — everything. Thus you will have the opportunity to rein them in, or at least to bring them back if you have the force to hold them. It is by this mercy, this indulgence that you will do them good. You are the only real affection that remains for him, the only soul that he loves with a pure love. If one day your severity causes him to close his heart to you, from that day forward he will have an even greater disorder in his life. Watch over your sons with a maternal tenderness that is profound, indulgent, and compassionate. Your great art will be to pretend not to know what you know, and to seem not to suffer when you are suffering — and there are many mothers who suffer thus in silence and who, in silence, buy back their son’s soul.”
